The Bixby Creek Bridge is found on
California's scenic Highway 1. The bridge was built from August
1931 to its completion in October, 1932 and was officially opened on
November 27. Before the bridge
was completed, motorists traveling from Monterey to the Big Sur area
had to take a narrow wagon road
over steep mountainous terrain and deep valleys to skirt this creek,
and the Little Sur River, sometimes
taking up to three days for the round trip. The wagon road is
still there, and the author and his wife
drove over the road in their 4-wheel drive vehicle the day before this
image was taken in the afternoon
of December 29, 2009.
