Dumont Dunes seen from
California State Highway 127, approximately 30 miles north of Baker in
the
Mojave Desert. The dunes are located southeast of and just
outside Death Valley National Park. In
the above image, taken December 28, 2011, the expanse of the dunes is
obvious. Rising about 450
feet above the desert floor, 4 miles in length and 1 miles wide, the
dunes contain approximately 7
billion cubic yards of sand. It is estimated there is enough sand
to build a road 40 feet wide by 6
inches deep around the earth at the equator three full times!
Nearly all of the dunes in this area
are part of the Dumont Dunes Off-Highway Vehicle Area, and are
administered by the Bureau of
Land Management (BLM).
