The Milky Way as seen
from the Chisos Mountain Resort in Big Bend National Park
on May 22, 2015. We spent three days in this park for the purpose
of imaging
the Milky Way, and many of the bright nebulae contained therein,
however the
weather never cooperated. We had about a ten-minute window from
outside
our lodge facility to make this exposure. To some, this image
might look
great, but it was shot through heavy cirrus clouds, as well as some low
cumulus clouds. The bright object in the far upper right is the
planet
Saturn. The red star below is Antares, in the constellation
Scorpius.
Big Bend National Park is considered to have the darkest skies of all
the
Parks in the lower 48 states, according to the International Dark Sky
Association.
