Looking due north from
the Barcroft Research Station dirt road at 11000 feet elevation,
one can see the higher peaks of the White Mountains east of Bishop,
California. In the
foreground are Bristlecone Pine trees, the oldest living things in the
entire world, found
here and some other extremely dry mountain areas of the
southwest. This image, taken
August 10, 2010, shows White Mountain itself (14,246 feet) just barely
visible to the
left center above the forground pine tree top (dead top). It is
the most distant peak
visible between Mt. Barcroft and Piute Mountain.
