This is the point
located at the Hug Point State Recreation Site and Oregon State Park,
located some 30 miles south of the Columbia River on the Pacific
Coast. This is where
a primitive roadbed was carved into this 'head' to facilitate early
motor vehicular and
horse-drawn stagecoaches and wagons access to Arch Cape to the
south. Called by
this name to 'hug' the shoreline, even at low tide for this traffic,
gave a much
better and safer passage around this point.
