Mount St. Helens as seen from the
Johnston Ridge Observatory on July 9, 2011. The observatory is
located some 5 1/2 miles north of the mountain at an elevation of 4313
feet, while St. Helens has an
elevation of 8365 feet. Before the catastrophic eruption on
May 18, 1980, its elevation was 9677
feet. The author was at his home on the Oregon coast and
witnessed the ash mixed with the coastal
fog during a second eruption on May 25, 1980. For additional
