Three pelicans fly low over
the shore waters off the Outer Banks of North Carolina on May 3, 2011.
Of the five subspecies, these are most likely the Eastern Brown
Pelican, with wingspans up to 8 feet
and weighing as much as 12 pounds. I watched these birds
off Hatteras Island near Wimble Shoals
in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore for over 30 minutes. They
would group to the north, fly low
over the breaking waves as they flew south for possibly a
mile, then fly well above the water to the
north and start the same 'low fly' to the south once again.
