Image of the Week Archives

May 15, 2011
PlanetaryConjunction
Four planets in conjunction on the morning of May 12, 2011 as seen from Mt. Graham in southeast
Arizona.  To the lower left is Mars, just visible in the smoke and haze from fires in New Mexico.
On the right (from brightest to faintest), are the planets Venus, Jupiter, and Mercury.  Jupiter is
slightly elongated, as two of its satellites (Ganymede and Io) are on the left.  On the orginal image
both Europa and Callisto (to the right) can be seen as well.
